Philosophical Counseling
Exploring life's deepest questions through Socratic dialogue and mindful inquiry into the nature of existence and the self.
Philosophical counseling offers the opportunity to step back from the pressures of daily life and examine one’s questions in conversation with a philosopher. It differs from psychotherapy in that it does not diagnose or treat mental health disorders, and it differs from life coaching in that it is not goal-driven or motivational in approach. There is no prescribed program and no attempt to direct clients toward particular outcomes. Instead, philosophical counseling is a reflective dialogue that draws on philosophical traditions to clarify values, assumptions, and patterns of reasoning so that decisions can be made with greater understanding and coherence. People seek this work when they are facing questions of meaning, purpose, ethical conflict, vocation, transition, or simply the desire to think more carefully about the shape of their lives. I am a Fellow of the American Philosophical Practitioners Association and was certified in client counseling in 2007. I maintain a small client list in order to give this work the attention it requires. Those interested in learning more are welcome to contact me.
